Downtown Sudbury Ribfest is an annual community event hosted in downtown Sudbury on Labour Day Long Weekend. (Friday & Saturday 11am - 10pm & Sunday 11am - 6pm) The 11th Annual Rendition of the 3-day festival is In support of the Sudbury YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, which supports those in our community to access all of the Y’s programs and services regardless of their financial circumstance. Along with a new ‘charity of choice,’ the festival is also in a new location. Find Downtown Sudbury Ribfest happening on Minto Street and in the Sudbury Arena parking lot.
To get us all ready for Sudbury’s Favourite Festival – here are 5 things we look forward to every year! (of course, we’re a bit biased)
5 - Food & Drink
Who doesn’t love festival foods. Sweets, Treats and Good Eats!
With a mix of locals and out-of-towners, Downtown Sudbury Ribfest offers a wide variety of sides and desserts to go with your Ribs – or own their own as you walk around downtown.
Downtown Sudbury is also home to over 40 unique bars & restaurants to wet your whistle and feed your appetite if Ribs & festival fare is just not for you.
4 - Merchandise & Crafters
There’s a wide variety of merchandise and crafters at the Annual Downtown Sudbury Ribfest. The majority of Ribfest merchandise and craft vendors slated for this year’s Downtown Sudbury Ribfest are from the Sudbury area.
The Greater Sudbury Market is just across the way from Downtown Sudbury Ribfest’s new location, and will be open Saturday(8am-2pm) and Sunday(10am-2pm) of the festival. The Elgin Street market is busting with local produce and products, this is a great opportunity to visit the Market if you haven’t yet this Summer – or even if you have.
Along with visiting the market for goods made locally, a number of downtown venues also carry locally produced items. If you are down for an adventure, we suggest visiting many shops located on Elgin, Durham and Cedar Streets.
3 - Local Bands
With twenty-six live, local bands playing over the three days, there’s sure to be a little something for everyone. The music schedule is shared at the bottom of this post, so be sure to check it out and see if you have any friends, family or neighbors performing– even if not, come on down and enjoy the vibe.
2 - Activities for the whole family!
Saturday and Sunday of the festival every year, Downtown Sudbury Ribfest creates a ‘Family Fun Zone’ – this year that fun zone will be happening in the parking lot on Minto Street as well as in front of the Sudbury Arena.
Activities include: Science North’s ‘Feel the Rush,’ YMCA Sudbury, Niagara Bouncing Inflatables, Sudbury BJJ & Muay Thai Academy demonstrations and Free Wagon Rides through the downtown.
Did we mention a Free Movie Night Under the Stars at Memorial Park? Downtown Sudbury and Launch Pad will be bringing ‘The Karate Kid’(1984) to the big screen in the park shortly after dark. Bring something to sit on and snacks.
1 – The Rib Teams, of course.
Six professional rib teams will be lined up on Minto street serving up some of the best Ribs, Chicken and Pulled Pork you can find.
Not only is Ribfest a community event, but it is a fierce competition. The participating teams travel across Canada to compete with one another, and teams display their trophies won throughout the years and cities in front of their booths. Once you’ve tried the ribs and feel confident in which team you believe is the best – head over to the Downtown Sudbury booth to cast your vote for People’s Choice!
