Boxing Day weekend, Saturday December 27th, shop downtown for great deals at locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries.
The recent repeal on by-law 2007-143, concerning businesses having the right to choose whether to be open on Boxing Day, December 26th, has allowed retail businesses the right to choose their own hours of operation for the Day after Christmas. As a result of the change, many of the local independent businesses in the Downtown, including the Rainbow Centre, are practicing their right and will be closed December 26, allowing their staff the opportunity for a two day breaks before opening December 27.
The change has also provided shoppers with a unique opportunity, not having to choose between supporting local and experiencing the shopping holiday. Customers may hunt for the best deals in electronics, appliances and other much sought after items on Boxing Day with big box stores open for the first time on the day after Christmas.
Jeff MacIntyre, Chair of Downtown Sudbury(the BIA representing the over 400 businesses and services in the downtown) stated, “Downtown is what is unique to Sudbury and Dec 27th is a Boxing Day tradition that we want to keep going downtown.”
And then take Saturday to explore the downtown where you can find over 400 businesses including over 50 retailers and over 40 unique restaurants. Park free at any municipal lot or meter so that you can explore with leisure, have a nice meal at a restaurant you have not visited before and shop for higher-end fashion, fine jewellery, artisan inspired and produced gifts and locally crafted items.
