The ‘Downtown Sudbury’ BIA “Win This Space” is an innovative business recruitment initiative, designed to encourage entrepreneurial activity in Downtown Sudbury as we are currently seeing a strong increase in interest – both with new business openings and proposed major developments. The “Win This Space” competition offers an opportunity for new and aspiring entrepreneurs to put their business ideas into action and make their dreams a reality.


The ‘Win This Space’ competition is an opportunity to submit a new and unique business idea to win a year’s lease (to a maximum of $15,000 not including utilities or leasehold improvements), plus other prizes, in Downtown Sudbury.


To promote the filling of vacancies and new entrepreneurial activity in Downtown Sudbury.
To inspire someone to become an entrepreneur in downtown Sudbury and to offer them support to do so.
To revitalize the downtown core by attracting new investment to the area.
To develop training opportunities and a business mentoring network.

Project Timeline (subject to change):

Launch of competition/promotion: Thursday, February 22, 2018 (‘Downtown Sudbury’ BIA AGM)
Registration deadline: Thursday, March 29, 2018 – 12 noon
Selection of up to 10 Finalists: Thursday, April 12, 2018
Mandatory Workshops (4): -Starting a Small Business - Wednesday, April 18th, 6pm - 7:30pm
-Writing a Business Plan and Market Research - Thursday, April 26th, 6pm - 8 pm
-Marketing and Social Media - Wednesday, May 2nd, 6pm - 8 pm
-Pitch Training and Workshop - Thursday, May 10th, 6pm - 8pm
Top 10 submit Business Plans: Friday, June 1st  
Judges selection of Top 5 Finalists: Friday, June 22nd
‘The Pitch’: Thursday, June 28th
Selection of Top Entrepreneur: announced Wednesday, July 4

The successful Entrepreneur wins a storefront space in Downtown Sudbury for 12 months – (to a maximum value of $15,000 – not including utilities or leasehold improvements) – plus additional prizes … expected start-up of October 1, 2018 (pending site negotiations, required renovations, etc).

Project guidelines:

The contest is open to entrepreneurs with new business ideas looking for commercial space in Downtown Sudbury.
Selected entrants must take business workshops, including the completion of business/financial plans to qualify
Winner must agree to locate their space in Downtown Sudbury with participating property owners.
Property Owners taking part must agree to have ‘Win This Space’ signage installed n property window/frontage to acknowledge participation.

Evaluation Criteria:

Creativity and uniqueness
Relevance to downtown
Market need in downtown
Sound business plan

Grand Prize/Sponsors:

1 year lease … to a maximum value of $15,000 (not including utilities or leasehold improvements)
Complementary business consultation and business/financial planning assistance

Entrepreneur participants:

Receive Complementary business consultation (1 hour) and business/financial planning assistance
Required to participate in 4 sessions (Marketing on a Shoestring Budget, Making an Effective ‘Pitch’, Business Plan, Marketing Research Made Easy) offered through the Regional Business Centre

Participating Property Owners Receive:

*chance to have their vacant space filled with possible long-term tenant
*possibility of other contestants pursuing leases
*exposure of their property through marketing of competition
*complementary signage on property window/front acknowledging participation

Anticipated Impacts:

Business & Economic Development … This initiative aligns with the Downtown Sudbury BIA Strategic Plan, Downtown Master Plan and the ‘From the Ground Up’

Employment & Skills Development … Partnership with the Small Business Centre to provide awareness to entrepreneurial opportunities in downtown Sudbury and provide training opportunities.

Community, Cultural and Social Impacts … brings positive attention to the efforts of the BIA and the City of Greater Sudbury/GSDC and their ability to be proactive in the recruitment of new investment.
