About the BIA

About the BIA

The Downtown Sudbury Business Improvement Area champions a vibrant, welcoming, and economically strong core — investing in the streets, storefronts, and experiences that make downtown the heart of the city.

Our Mandate

The Downtown Sudbury BIA is a not-for-profit organization established under Ontario’s Municipal Act to improve, beautify, and promote the downtown business district on behalf of the property owners and businesses within its boundaries. Every commercial property inside the BIA is automatically part of the membership by geography — meaning the work we do is funded by, and accountable to, the very district it serves.

Our purpose is straightforward: make downtown a place where people want to gather, shop, dine, work, and stay. We do that by reinvesting our levy into streetscape improvements, marketing campaigns, signature events, safety and cleanliness programs, and advocacy on behalf of more than 300 member businesses. When downtown thrives, the whole city benefits.

What We Do

  • Events & placemaking — We produce and support signature gatherings like the Downtown Night Market, Up Here Festival activations, and seasonal patio programs that bring foot traffic to local storefronts.
  • Marketing & promotion — We run year-round campaigns, manage this website and social channels, and spotlight member businesses, specials, and what’s on across the district.
  • Beautification & maintenance — Hanging baskets, banners, holiday lighting, snow clearing support, and graffiti removal keep the district clean and inviting.
  • Safety & ambassadors — We coordinate with the City and partners on lighting, wayfinding, and a friendly street-presence program that helps visitors feel welcome.
  • Advocacy — We represent the collective voice of downtown businesses to City Council, transit, and economic development on the issues that shape the core.
  • Member tools — Through our digital suite, businesses can manage their listing, post specials, and access the resources that come with being part of the district.

“A great downtown isn’t built by one storefront — it’s built by hundreds of them, all cueing the good stuff together.”

How We’re Run

Governance

The BIA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of business owners and operators. The Board is elected by its membership, with two councillors appointed by City Council, and sets the strategic direction, approves the annual budget and levy, and oversees the staff team that delivers programs day to day.
